Who We Are

The Drayton Mujo concept was formally created in 2022, the result of a longtime love of ceramics and bonsai. Our design sensibilities are rooted in mid-century clean lines and simple glazes. We are located in a small town called Ferndale, Michigan, which is just outside of Detroit. We currently produce around 150 pots per year.

Thanks for checking out our little shop and feel free to reach out. We'd love to hear from you!

What's up with the name?

The word "mujo" in Japanese, roughly translates to "impermanence", which resonates with how we view the art of bonsai — ever evolving, ever changing, ever impermanent. Drayton is the street on which we work... our own little slice of impermanence in this universe.

Do I take commissions?

I do not currently take commissions. It's not you — it's a me thing. I find that when I'm doing commissions, it takes a bit of the fun out of the process. I can't help but imagine the person who is asking for the pot standing over my shoulder, watching every move I make. I like the creative freedom of being able to produce the work that I'm inspired to make in the moment.

What I will sometimes take are "requests". Requests are suggestions for size/glaze variations or combinations, based on past or current work. I don't treat these as guarantees, but I may jot them down and add them to my production queue. If and when I do produce something inline with a request, I'll typically give the person first dibs, before opening it up to the general population. Feel free to reach out!
